I filled up an entire page with details about how I met Raman and about the library and finished by sending my regards to her family. Then I sealed it, took it downstairs and put it away carefully in my schoolbag, wondering where I’d get the money to buy a stamp.

Later that morning, on my way to school, I had an idea. I got off two stops earlier than normal and walked to the post office. I used the money I had saved on the bus fare to buy a stamp for the letter. I felt an excited lurch in the pit of my stomach as I opened the red postbox and slid the envelope into it. It landed inside with a joyful clang, as though it was celebrating my small secret victory over periamma. I couldn’t help grinning all day at school. Before I left, I even wished Mrs. Rao a happy Deepavali.
